Big time club Wolfsburg kept its place in the Bundesliga, beating Bundesliga 2 club Eintracht Braunschweig 2-0 (1-0,1-0) on aggregate in the relegation playoff.
Long time Bundesliga mainstays VFB Stuttgart, and Hannover 96, relegated out of the Bundesliga after last season, took the first two places in Bundesliga 2, and will automatically return to the big time next season. Ingolstadt and Darmstadt will be relegated to Bundesliga 2 after a two-year stint in the big time.
Third-division Jahn Regensberg won the Bundesliga 2 promotion playoff, 3-1 (1-1, 2-0) on aggregate over 1860 Munich. Jahn Regensburg had been in Bundesliga 2 for one season in 2015-16. 1860 Munich drops to the third division for the first time since 1993. Wurzburg Kickers and Karlsruhe will be relegated to Liga 3.
Sandhausen, Daniel Gordon's club, faded to tenth place in Bundesliga 2. Sandhausen ended the first half of the season in sixth place, just off the pace. Daniel missed the final six weeks of the season with a back injury.
