  • Advice For JA/NPL: Steve Malcolm Championship Trophy

The Jamaican National Premier League has entered a new era with Cash Plus being the primary sponsor.

I propose that Cash Plus usher in the new era by creating a permanent
championship trophy to be called The STEVE MALCOLM CUP.

This trophy should rise to the iconic status of the Manning Cup and Da Costa Shield.

Remember a few years ago when Wray & Nephew created a wretched championship trophy of a soccer ball mounted atop three rum bottles?

Cash Plus should borrow a page from ice hockey. The trophy should be a large silver bowl, on a base designed to hold the names of players on the teams who won the championship.

The National Hockey League Stanley Cup is perhaps too complicated of a design. The eight rings below the cup hold the names of the players for the past 60 years. When it is time for the rings to be replaced, they are mounted on a replica Stanley Cup at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The American Hockey Legaue Calder Cup has a simpler design. A silver bowl sits atop a two-tiered square wood base. Plates with the names of players of championship teams are mounted on the base. The base holds 20 plates. When a plate is removed to make room for a new team, the old plate goes to the Hockey Hall Of Fame.

In a perfect world, the Cash Plus NPL would pick up a secondary sponsorship from Wray & Nephew. The champions would drink Wray & Nephew's product from the trophy.

In addition to the Stanley Cup, here are the names of the other hockey championship trophies.

TURNER CUP (retired) (International Hockey Legue 1946-2001)

Note: The United Hockey League has renamed itself the International Hockey League. This past week, the league announced that a new
trophy to be called the Turner Cup will be given to the league playoff
    champion.

The trophy is named after Joe Turner, an amateur goaltender from the Detroit / Windsor area in the late 1930's and early 1940's who was killed in World War II.
