JC coach in trouble
Published: Thursday | November 19, 2009

Alfred Henry ... coach of Jamaica College. - File

Jamaica College's (JC) Manning Cup football coach Alfred Henry could face a lengthy suspension from the game when the Inter-secondary School Sports Association's (ISSA) disciplinary committee meets in a matter of days.

Henry might find himself in trouble due to comments he allegedly made at the end of his team's ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Second-round match against Wolmer's, which they lost 2-3 and in the process ending their chance of advancing to the semi-finals of the competition.

Henry stated at the end of the game in question that the administrators (ISSA) can not administrate and that the referees cannot referee; upset that his team had to play five games in a 13-day span. Henry further described the organisers and referees as incompetent and further labelled the referees as "nincompoops".

Disciplinary committee

George Forbes, competition's director of ISSA, advised The Gleaner that the end of the matter has not yet been seen. "He has to face the disciplinary committee for his comments, so we are going to convene a disciplinary meeting," Forbes said. "He has to substantiate his comments, so it is not the end of the matter where JC is concerned. Every match this coach has to blame somebody," he added.

"The committee can decide that he cannot coach any schoolboy football for a period of time," Forbes said. "There are several options that are open to the disciplinary committee. So people can talk and say what they want to say, but there is a code of ethics that is guided by ISSA," he added.

In spite of the concerns about the running of the competition from various quarters, Forbes is satisfied with the competition's progress.

Henry is a cruff...during the pre-seaosn Linkz 20/20 tournament he had to be physically taken out of Jarrett Park as he tried to attack the ref (a cop but he maybe did not know that) and used a whole heap of very colourful language at the officials in front of his players telling the refs what to do with their mothers.

People with such short fuses should not be in charge of school boys

i'm disappointed that the principal puts up with this sort of behaviour. sometimes the lure of championships puts everything else on the back burner.

Oh yes, some principals are just as bad or worst than the people they hire as coaches as they will put up with bad behavior as long as the teams win.

Questions for ISSA

The Editor, Sir:
In response to your Gleaner sports lead story 'JC Coach in Trouble', I think it is important to analyse what Mr Henry is saying and ask yourself some very pertinent questions. Don't just rush out and kill the messenger.
Does the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) regularly review games to see how well the referees performed?
What is the impact of playing matches at 1 p.m. with temperatures on the field probably exceeding 100F?
How do our hard and rough playing surfaces, such as Constant Spring, affect the recovery of our players?
How long does it take to recover from playing three matches in five days?
What is the physiological impact on teenagers 14 to 19 playing such tight schedules?
48 hours FIFA rule
Is the 48 hours FIFA rule more applicable to temperate climates, good fields and for adults?
Has the relevant medical authority been asked for advice as to whether the scheduling is safe?
It is said that it takes weeks for an athlete to recover from a marathon (26.2 miles) that takes just over two hours, hence, athletes seldom run more than two a year. It also takes a considerable time to recover after playing for five hours in five days. Without adequate recovery, our young players will be more suscep-tible to injuries, and their ability to perform in the class-room will be compromised.
I finish by asking one more question: Who should be liable for the failure to take due care of our future sportsmen?
I contend it should be the organising body, ISSA. ISSA should be made accountable to its major stakeholders, the students, and not be a slave to either the sponsor or its own schedule.

The messenger needs to be "killed" because there is a way to lodge your protests. He chose another way.

The marathon comparison is stupid, btw.
