Hydel top Wesley Powell Invitational meet
BY DANIA BOGLE Observer staff reporter
    Wednesday, December 12, 2012

FLYING high after a fine football season, Hydel High School topped the overall team score with 359.50 points at the 10th annual Wesley Powell Invitational track and field meet at Excelsior last Saturday as the 2012/2013 season got underway.

Jamaica College (JC) earned 187.50 points for second, with St Andrew High third on 132.5, Wolmer's Girls fourth with 131.5, and Wolmer's Boys 'A' (117) rounding out the top five.

Excelsior's Jodi-Ann Petrie claimed the Class Three girls' long jump after clearing 5.15m ahead of teammate Ava Anna Venair, 5.07m.
Oshane Shaw of Wolmer's tossed 42.86m to secure the Class One boys' javelin, while the girls' equivalent went to Hydel's Davia Brown with 31.09m.
Javaune Gordon, the lone competitor in the Boys' Class One high jump, leaped 1.60m. JC won both the Class One and Two boys' high jump.
Alec Verne Longmore threw 14.36m to win Class One shotput, while the lower class went to Karl Leon Grant with 14.30m.

Dwayne Chambers and Hydel's Alex Rookwood both cleared 6.45m in the Class One boys' long jump, with Chambers being accredited the victory. Michellae Walker of St Andrew won the girls' equivalent with 1.45m.

On the track, Kemoy Blake of JC posted 17:35.35 to win the boys' 5,000m, with teammate Nicholas Deighton second in 17:38.63 minutes.
In the girls' 3,000m, Monifa Green of Hydel clocked 11:46.04 minutes to beat teammate Danique Derby, 11:49.46.

Excelsior used the meet to debut its new nine-lane regraded track and newly refurbished throw areas. Coach David Riley was pleased with the new surface which should go a far way in helping the school's bid for next season's ISSA Boys' & Girls' Athletics Championships title.
