  • Murder toll jumps to 1,105

    Tuesday, October 30, 2007

ONE hundred and thirty-four people were murdered during the month of September, pushing the island's murder toll to 1,105.
This is 151 more than the 951 reported murders reported at the end of September 2006, but lower than the 1,264 murders up to September 30, 2005.
The 134 murders in September has so far been the third highest monthly murder toll this year, beaten only by January when there were 149 and July which had 136.
The Kingston Metropolitan Region, which includes St Catherine, recorded 81 murders for the month, compared to 53 in rural parishes. However, 14 of those killings were in the St Catherine South Division, St Andrew Central 13, St Andrew South 13, and St Andrew North 12.
In the rural parishes, St James had 16 murders for the month, followed by St Ann with nine. Portland was the only parish in which there were no murders reported.
The police said 24 of the 134 murders were gang-related, one because of drugs, six domestic, 38 because of 'other criminal act', but had no motive for 65 of the murders.
There were also more shootings and break-ins in September than there were for the same time last year. However, there were fewer cases of rape, carnal abuse and robbery, according to the monthly police crime statistics for September, which were released yesterday.
According to the police, 115 cases of break-ins were reported up to the end of September, compared to 77 for the same period last year.
For shooting, there were 132 cases reported for September, compared to 103 for the same month last year.
There were 32 cases of rape this September, down from 63 last year; 99 cases of robbery, down from 145 last year and 194 in 2005; and 12 cases of carnal abuse, down from 32 cases last year.
