Overspending and waste uncovered in Local Gov’t administration

    Friday, 18 January 2008

Several instances of overspending and waste have been uncovered in the administration of local government.

Minister with responsibility for Local Government matters, Robert Montaque on Friday said the irregularities were uncovered during the reform process.

Addressing questions from Rotary Club members about plans to clean-up the city of Kingston, Mr. Montague said several instances of overspending were uncovered in relation to an existing beautification project.

The minister said a budget for the project has been on the books for three years but the city looks no better for it.

Mr. Montaque however assured that he was not on a witch hunt but simply seeking to get on with the business of cleaning up the city.

Meanwhile, the minister said the offices of the MPM which are being rented at a cost of $600,000 per month are to be relocated.

Mr. Montaque says the move is in a bid to cut costs.

The office will be relocated from 33 Half-Way-Tree Road to the NSWMA building a few metres away at 61.

The minister has been given 24 months to implement several recommendations from the National council to revamp and decentralise local government.
