st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }The police are reporting a further decline in Jamaica's murder rate. Latest crime statistics show that between January and Tuesday, murders were down 8% when compared to last year.
The number of reported rapes was also down 16%.
However, crime overall increased during the period.
Major crimes such as carnal abuse, house breaking, robbery and larceny increased by 30% over the corresponding period last year.
Robberies went up sharply by 28% while break-ins were up 105% and larceny 145%.
Police Commissioner, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, says there were several reasons for the sharp rise.
"There are many reasons that account for it. It is not just the fact that there are actual increases but there is also the issue of the internal mechanisms by which we put the figures together. I said last year that there is tremendous under-reporting by the police," the Commissioner said.
"We found that in a couple of Divisions you want your Divisions to look good so you don't record the actual figures. This is something we have tightened up on," he continued.
