Yes it affected Air Jamaica on the North Eastern routes but none of these new airline you speak of has the network of travel to different places that AA has.

How can you have the growth without Airline seats?

Airlines have code share partners to extend their reach.

They don't need to fly directly into every gateway.... drill down a little deeper into the airline bizniz.

Sangster is now a very dynamic regional hub airport with a significant government supported national carrier and is very attractive to many carriers.
Sangster currently has more throughput than any regional airport except for San Juan.... and has capacity for 9 million arrivals/departures annually.

This modernized, expanded and privatized airport is a major reason why investment in Jamaica's tourism was developed by the Spanish chains, Tavistock/Harmony Cove, Celebration and many other significant investors "in the pipeline". How do I know? ... the investors stated this in their releases.

There was no need to subsidize foreigners to maintain flights.
He could even have refused... and then relented/changed course if there was a seat deficit... it is so easy to add or reduce flights into a gateway like Jamaica with excess capacity and few restrictions.

Bartlett should incentivize... not subsidize foreigners. He is well meaning but was rolled over by American... and of course you fall in lock step with his positions due to your starry eyed idolatry.

A study of the regional airline business is indicated for you... not merely a study of ministerial statements in the Jamaican press combined with half baked speculation.

If one Airline pull out in the winter season it takes months if not years to convince other carriers to take up the slot so it has to be immediate in a time like now. Long term it maybe better off but short term it creates a big problem.

I speak facts... you seem to speak out of an unbridled support for your minister.... that is your inalienable right.

Jamaica is Jamaica... it's not the "Caribbean".
Because service was reduced in certain Caribbean markets that does not necessarily mean a reduction in the Jamaican market is indicated.
Similarly if flights were increased elsewhere ... that does not mean an increase in Jamaica is warranted.

It does not take years to convince carriers to increase capacity into a gateway where they have a presence.
Once there is an opportunity to make money on a route and/or grab market share from a competitor (2 different objectives) existing carriers can realign their flights in a matter of a few months.

The increased flights scenario I posed was hypothetical... to demonstrate that different Caribbean markets have differing needs and do not mirror each other necessarily in the response of airlines to local conditions.

Additionally .... the article YOU posted above is indicating certain airlines planning increased service into some gateways.... despite the recession.

There are airlines planning expanding/starting service in some gateways even in the face of the downturn.... I'm sure this is not just to make money in the short term.... but also to grab market share and positioning.

There are many airlines wanting to break the stranglehold American has on the Caribbean basin.

That's the subtext below the surface driving many of these ventures.
