  • Helicopter crashes in Haiti - 2 dead

(CNN) -- Both people aboard a helicopter died Thursday night when it crashed into a mountain in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute said Friday.

The accident occurred about 7 p.m. in Dajabon, just east of the border with Haiti, said spokeswoman Rosani Zapata.

"We presume that they were U.S. citizens, part of a mission helping Haiti," she said about the victims, whom she identified as pilot John Ward and co-pilot James Jalovec.

The helicopter was registered to a company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and had filed a flight plan from Santiago to Jimani in the Dominican Republic to Port-au-Prince in Haiti. It was en route back to Santiago when the crash occurred, she said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation
