<P class=StoryText align=justify>THE police's effort at stepping up crime-fighting in the volatile St Andrew community of August Town by dredging a section of a river bed in the area suffered a setback yesterday when the heavy-duty demolition truck to undertake the task got stuck in the soft riverbed soil.<P class=StoryText align=justify>The aim, according to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), was to remove the considerable build-up of sand and stone on the bed of the Hope River in the vicinity of Barrett Drive and Bedward Gardens in order that the police can better patrol the area.<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width=330 align=center border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR><TR><TD><SPAN class=Description>Police and residents of August Town attempt t o push this demolition truck out of a rut in the middle of the Hope River tributary in which it got stuck yesterday. The truck was donated to the police by Key Motors to dredge a section of the riverbed, as part of plans to improve the police's crime-fighting tactics in the volatile area. (Photo: Lionel Rookwood) </SPAN></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><P class=StoryText align=justify>But the effort failed to get off the ground as the demolition truck lay stuck in the sand for hours, defying the attempts of the police and residents in the area to get it out.The vehicle, a Hyundai HD 160 tipper, capable of clearing debris and loading it onto itself, was donated to the constabulary by Key Motors and according to company representative Howard Gracey, who was on site, it was initially brought in to help with the clearing of roads and gullies, especially during the hurricane season.<P class=StoryText align=justify>He told the Observer that insufficient planning was to
blame for the unfortunate incident yesterday.<P class=StoryText align=justify>"Frankly, I don't think any of us realised the extent of the problem. The main problem is that even though it's sand-based, the water is still flowing beneath the sand so because of the size truck, each movement we make, it's sinking instead of (reversing)," he said, adding confidently, "we're going to get it out of the sink. We're going to use a four-wheel drive to get it out, then once it's out we'll see what we can do in terms of assisting
the officers."<P class=StoryText align=justify>When questioned about alternatives in the face of the failure of the truck to accomplish the targeted goal, Gracey said they were concentrating on releasing it from the rut before considering options.<P class=StoryText align=justify>"We have the technicians here to assess the problem but we have to take it by priorities. The first priority is to get it out, then we'll go from there," he said.<P class=StoryText align=justify>thompsonk@jamaicaobserver.com
