  • JFJ ups rights education campaign

RIGHTS group Jamaicans For Justice (JFJ) yesterday launched another phase of its educational campaign which will target, among others, warders at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Facility and places of safety for children.

The initiative, which is being funded by a $34.8-million grant from the European Union, was launched at the Excelsior Community College along Mountain View Avenue in St Andrew and will also facilitate human rights training for 300 police recruits.

Titled 'Deepening Education, Advocacy and Legal Support: Empowering for Defence of Rights', the project will also target tough St Andrew communities such as Mountain View and Cockburn Pen; Flankers in St James; and the St Catherine communities of Newlands and Central Village.

Members of these communities will be furnished with information about human rights, which will contribute towards the building capacity to claim, defend and protect these rights, the JFJ said.

Speaking at yesterday's launch, head of the delegation of he European Union to Jamaica Marco Mazzocchi Alemanni said that the rights of all Jamaicans must be protected even those in the homosexual and lesbian communities.

"There have recently been concerns raised about the level of human rights abuses in Jamaica and it is clear that support for human rights is as important as ever," he said. "As Jamaica tackles the problem of crime, we cannot forget the central importance of defending human rights for all, without discrimination."
