    WESTERN BUREAU:

    Following on the heels of the $2 billion multi-purpose stadium built to host the Cricket World Cup opening ceremony and warm-up matches, there are a number of major developments that will take place in Trelawny, the island's 18th-century commercial capital, over the medium and long term. Aside from Harmony Cove - the most ambitious tourism project ever initiated in Jamaica - five other major projects have been unveiled:

    The 140-lot Tamarind Ridge gated community by Silver Sands Jamaica Limited;

    The US$1.2 billion 900 acre-resort development and township by Amaterra Jamaica Limited;

    A mega cultural attraction tagged 'Outameni Experience';

    The 350-room Couples Harmony Cove;

    The Excellence's Oyster Bay venture.

    The six ventures span a completion phase of about 10 years.

    Part of strategic plan

    Last year, during the historic signing with the Tavistock Group out of Florida for the 2,200 acres Harmony Cove project, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller spoke of the significant and far-reaching impact the development would have on the tourism landscape, with positive spin-offs for the wider community.

    "Harmony Cove, valued at US$2 billion, forms part of the strategic plan to reposition Jamaica's tourism industry," the Prime Minister said then. "It is expected to add 5,000 rooms to the current room stock, create 10,000 job opportunities in the construction sector in the short term, and 10,000 permanent jobs when completed."

    She said that Harmony Cove would create a well-needed economic boom to the parishes of St. Ann, Trelawny and St. James, while stemming the urban shift, which is a real challenge to the country

    Mixed-use land project

    Since that announcement, Trelawny businessman Keith Russell and his American partner Chip Murphy have revealed a mixed-use land project, which will see the area just outside of Duncans and next door Harmony Cove become home to a 2,000-room resort and an 18-hole championship golf course.

    A total of five resorts have been planned, with an additional 2,000 villas and townhouse lots, luxury apartments and a commercial centre - the first of its kind in Jamaica.

    The project is expected to transform the landscape of resort development in the country and change the face of the tourist industry, Mr. Russell told The Gleaner's Hospitality Jamaica recently.

    In another interview last week, Mr. Russell told The Sunday Gleaner that he and his wife Paula, through their company Silver Sands Jamaica Limited, are currently putting in infrastructure by way of roads and pipes in the Duncans area to accommodate 140 lots for the Tamarind Ridge gated community. The quarter-acre size lots are priced at a starting cost of US$80,000.

    "Overlooking the proposed Amaterra Resort Township, Tamarind Ridge offers a spectacular view of the ocean, coupled with the stunning mountain that juts into the sea," Mrs. Russell told The Gleaner. "Some of the best views on the whole coast are being offered here."

    Tamarind Ridge's target market includes executives, professionals and returning residents looking to construct their dream home.

    Coupled with these major ventures is the cultural heritage attraction, 'Outameni Experience'. The Outameni Experience is a partnership between renowned filmmaker and producer Lennie Little-White's Orange Valley Holdings and the National Investment Bank of Jamaica. Conspicuously depicting the Jamaican Motto 'Out of Many, One People', Outameni is being presented in small architecturall

    Before the election: Well...as I said, Sitah P shall set the table for and her government shall be involvedeconomic activity across the island the like of which has never before been seen...

    ...and...

    she should reap the just reward of electorial victory...

    ...but...if she does not the incoming party shall reap a bonaza of economic activity! (tup)

    ...and, crime? ...that mother of all problems? Look for a gradual increasing major assault on it! Hey...Jamaica is small and the authorities shall make it so small the gun criminals will have no where to run! (Clap)

      If you jump out of an aeroplane at 10,000 feet.. the laws of gravity will dictate you will hit the ground.. how you hit the ground and what occurs during the decent is a function of you prepardness and ability manage the trip.

      Some people, organizations perform better than others.. congratulating someone for being able to fall and hit the ground is foolish.

      Our dilema is figuring out how to prevent this administration from retarding growth as they do all to remain in power

      "Better we create a problem in the efforts to get in and then karreck it once we reach, rather that sit on the sidelines and watch..."

      Until you understand the nature of the beast that has grown fat and rabid over these 17 years, you will continue to whistle in the wind.

          Clowny, if you notice my post was in response to Karl's waxing nonsensically about activities waaaay behind the Global schedule and in the face of an almost 1 Trillion Dollar JMD debt, World leading murder statistics and WOEFUL social infrastructure.

          Some call it building Castles on sand....

          There is are a reason why our Tourism product is being retarded.. when you figure it out.. come back.

          There was a big fracas regarding lack of enough Cruise ship berths in Ochi retarding the Cruise Industry in Jamaica..

          Cayman has ZERO BERTHS and gets 6 per day.. figure it out Jawge..

                Oh Karl.. don't tell me you are no going to grasp after the literal straw.

                It is widely understood that cumalative growth over the past 10 years has been close to 10%.

                Remember, you have to take into account the effect of gravity. Only Manley was able to defy Gravity in the 70's but we have a NEW PNP now since 1989.. this NEW PNP is only able to slow down the effects of gravity..

                Stap grasping at straws.. just clap louder and whistle harder..
