US Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr Jill Biden are expected to arrive here tomorrow at 4 pm at the Piarco International Airport for an official visit. The Bidens leave on Tuesday afternoon. According to the White House Web site, Biden looks forward to meeting with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar as well as leaders of other Caribbean countries, whom she has “graciously offered to invite.”

“This trip will be an important chance to discuss our collective efforts to promote economic growth and development, access to energy and our ongoing collaboration on citizen security.” Biden is the 47th vice president of the United States, jointly elected with President Barack Obama. He is a member of the Democratic Party and was a US senator from Delaware from January 3, 1973, until his resignation on January 15, 2009, following his election to the vice presidency. He was elected to a second term alongside Obama in 2012.

Obama visited Trinidad in 2009 for the Summit of the Americas. On Tuesday, the Bidens will pay courtesy calls on President Anthony Carmona and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The US Vice President will also attend a press conference at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s. Information posted on the Web site said Biden will also travel to Brazil and Colombia this week. It stated: “In each country, the Vice President will meet with key leaders to discuss the full range of bilateral and regional issues.

“In Brazil, he looks forward to the opportunity to meet with President Rousseff and Vice President Temer and discuss ways to deepen our economic and commercial partnership and further our engagement on the broad array of bilateral, regional, and global issues that connect our two countries. “In Colombia, the Vice President will meet with President Santos to build on security relations and focus on ways to further the prosperity of our two countries.”

General manager Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre Leroy Browne could not give any information about the Biden’s stay. He would only say, “We have a privacy policy in place to respect and safeguard the privacy of our guests and team members including past, current and future guests or team members. “We therefore cannot provide any information regarding the VP’s visit or any details that may jeopardise such privacy.”

Traffic restrictions have not yet been announced by the T&T Police Service.
