“Non-cooperation is beyond the reach of the bayonet." - Ghandi

For Women's History Month, we're honoring the lives of unsung black heroes:

Gloria Richardson is best known as a civil rights figure and the leader of the Cambridge Movement based in Maryland. Born in 1922, Gloria Richardson was educated at Howard University. Trained as a social worker, she was not able to work in her field as Cambridge, Maryland's city government would not hire black social workers.

In 1962, Richardson organized the Cambridge Nonviolent Action Committee, the first adult led affiliate of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. They began protests such as sit-ins. The Cambridge protests led to a major riot in June 1963 and the state of Maryland imposed martial law in Cambridge. By the end of 1963, Cambridge schools, hospitals, libraries, and buses became desegregated. Richardson's profile as a civil rights leader rose to national prominence. She was honored as one of the six "Negro Women Fighters For Freedom" featured on stage during the March on Washington For Jobs and Freedom.

In 1964, Richardson married and moved to New York. She retired from public life and continued her social work in New York City. Richardson is currently 91 years old.
