  • Portia stepping down as PNP President

One the most popular Politian in the history of Jamaica is stepping down and the race for party leader is wide open.

The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.

Most sensible thing she would have done in her long career

She is doing the right thing and not a moment too soon.

At least she didn't hang on until she was asked to leave like Seaga. I will give her credit for not putting her party through that nightmare scenario.

But she's leaving next September. Still think she won't put her party through a nightmare scenario?

Well that is her intention but she deserves credit for announcing it before specifying the date..

A witch hunt started immediately after the PNP was beaten by the JLP by the narrowest of margins.
Her problem was shotta granny impersonation she did at a recent rally, and the flogging her party received in the local elections. The PNPYO merely stated the obvious.
There is trouble in that house, and Portia leaving is not going ameliorate things.

I don't think the timetable for her departure is a problem. She just won reelection and there are no national elections on the horizon.

What will be interesting to see is if she inserts herself into the campaigning for her successor. Traditionally the outgoing PNP president has not done that, at least not publicly.

She will be gone by the end of March and don't be too sure about no national elections on the horizon. JLP only has a 1 seat majority, that means a general elections is always on the Horizon and the PNP knows it. The PNP is broke in fighting each other. If the EOJ has to do a by election in a swing seat for any reason then the JLP would probably call a general election. If one JLP MP switches party then the JLP will call a general election. If the PNP descends further into chaos then the JLP may call a general election.

That is true, the PNP is in no position to fight a general election so if Holness sees an opportunity to solidify his mandate he would take it.

She should have done this a few months ago. You think she did this because she wanted to?

These oldsters like Seaga and Portia think the are entitled. Anyway wish her all the best. Hope it will be a good battle but not long and drawn out and the best man/woman step forward and rebuild the PNP.

Is constitutional reform on the table.i.e

*)Constituents can pick their own MPs from an open primary
*) When chosen by the people they can't be arbitrarily removed by the party, unless by a process of impeachment for violating the new constitution
*) The office of the OCG having prosecutorial powers
*) The people being able to directly elect its Prime Minister

********These can be done by a referendum.

Will some journalist or individual with connections ask these pressing questions under the heading the masses are hungry for real change.

Glad she is gone, but the process would have been smoother if the above was implemented.

She didn't want to but she did it in the interest of the party. Unlike Seaga who made his party irrelevant for a decade before he realized he could no longer hold on.

It just seems like the calling for the removal of Portia is an indictment on her supporting cast(her appointees) .
Ergo Phillips and company are not viable options.
I do like Lisa, and I think the best way to ensure a directional change is for the PNP ti tuck its tail between its leg and beg Heather Robinson to seek nomination for party leadership.
