As I’ve said over and over Jamaica and Jamaicans need to change their perceptions of a tourist and tourism. Not every tourist travels for sun, sand and sea. Diversify the Jamaican tourist product.

This is where we can make a big money if they have Health Tourism.

Just imagine if we can setup a system to take Medicare and American insurance and have some of the procedures at a fraction of the cost in the US. Train and hire good professionals. This would also include hospital and hospice care for longer term stays. This would include dental.

Now think, isn't that a true marriage for tourism and STEM?

JAMPRO seeks to boost medical, health and wellness tourism

In an effort to boost medical, and health and wellness tourism in the island, Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) has held discussions with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Health and Wellness geared towards attracting more visitors for treatment and surgical procedures in Jamaica.

According to Dr Andrew Spencer, executive director, Tourism Product Development Company Limited (TPDCo), Jamaica is capable of meeting the medical, health and wellness needs of people from other countries, and the Government, through the Ministry of Tourism and its agents, such as TPDCo, will continue to explore possibilities for growth and expansion of the subsectors that include medical, and health and wellness tourism.

Dr Spencer was speaking after his address to more than 200 youth who are interested in having careers in the tourism sector, at TPDCo’s Youth Expo and Career Fair, at the Girl Guides Association of Jamaica headqaurters in St Andrew recently.

Big push for science dominance - Businesses urged to contribute to building national STEM centre

Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ plan to establish six STEM centres of excellence might draw on the template of a private-sector-led initiative that is already spearheading a game-changing innovation and research academy.

The movement is expected to break the cycle of anaemic economic growth and build technical and creative capacity within Jamaica’s workforce.

A fundraising campaign is now under way to finance the first in what is expected to be a series of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, centres to be built, equipped and operated in cities and towns throughout Jamaica.

Ocho Rios poised for record cruise ship arrivals
    Monday, November 25, 2019

Ocho Rios is posed for a record 2019/2020 cruiseship season with some of the largest vessels in the world scheduled to call at the resort town.

Some 15 vessels have stopped in Ocho Rios since the start of November.

“Ocho Rios, alone, will be seeing over 756,000 visitors for the cruise-shipping season,” executive director of Jamaica Vacations (JAMVAC), Joy Roberts, told JIS News.

“Between November and March or say April, which is the busiest period for cruise shipping, the town should be seeing at least one and sometimes multiple ships per day,” she added.
