Patterson: Tourism a pillar for accelerated development

Former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has said that given tourism’s magnetic linkage to other industries, the sector has now become a pillar on which sustainable growth and accelerated development must depend.

Patterson, a former tourism minister, said with the diminution of export earnings from sugar, bananas, and rice for the Caribbean, and cocoa, beef, peanuts, and minerals in significant sections of Africa, tourism has now become the cornerstone on which many countries build their economies.

“The contribution of tourism to African GDP (gross domestic product) was measured at US$168 billion in 2019, equivalent to 7.1 per cent of the total GDP. Tourism also generated close to 25 million jobs while visitor expenditures generated US$61.3 billion, or 10.4 per cent of total exports. In the Caribbean, the industry generated US$61.5 billion in 2019, representing 13.9 per cent of the region’s GDP,” Patterson said.

Him and him Vlogger them a look more evidence and labourite corruption.
    • Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

Jamaican economy grew 5.1 per cent last year

This was disclosed by Director General of the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), Dr Wayne Henry, who said the out-turn was spurred by an estimated six per cent growth for the services industry and 2.1 per cent for the goods producing industry.

“All [sub] industries are estimated to have recorded growth in output, with the exception of the construction, and mining and quarrying industries. Growth during 2022 was led by hotels and restaurants, up 48.9 per cent; other services, up 11.1 per cent; agriculture, forestry and fishing, up nine per cent; and transport, storage and communication, up six per cent,” Henry informed.

Jamaican GDP back to pre-COVID levels

The size of the Jamaican economy should return to pre-pandemic levels, a year ahead of expectations, the Planning Institute of Jamaica, PIOJ, predicted on Tuesday.

It signals a recovery from one of the worst recorded shocks in Jamaica’s history.

“The latest projection is that the Jamaican economy is likely to fully recover to pre-COVID-19 output in fiscal year 2022/23 earlier than the previously projected 2023/24,” said PIOJ Director General Dr Wayne Henry at his quarterly briefing on the performance of the economy.

There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

BUOYED by the continuation of strong tourist arrivals, the reopening of the Jamalco alumina plant, and overall positive out-turns across most industries, the local economy is recovering faster than previously projected.

The services industry, driven by continued growth across its hotels and restaurants subsector, also accelerated the pace of recovery, adding some 23.4 per cent increase in out-turns and accounting for the largest growth in the division as a result of increased stopover and cruise passenger arrivals.

"Visitor expenditure was estimated to have increased by 46.3 per cent to US$543.7 million for the months of October and November 2022," preliminary data revealed.

The sector similarly, for the full calendar year of 2022 at which time the economy was said to have registered growth of 5.1 per cent, also accounted for the bulk of growth accompanied by higher real value added across most of the other industries.

"Growth during 2022 was led by hotels and restaurants, up 48.9 per cent; other services, up 11.1 per cent; agriculture forestry and fishing, up 9 per cent; and transport, storage and communication, up 6 per cent," Henry said.

BritJammers want to own a piece of Jamaica

                    Event returns after two-year break

They came to party, but ended up owning a piece of the rock, their parents and grandparents called home long before they were born.

BritJam patrons started coming to Jamaica for the annual ‘British Link Up’ 12 years ago, and today many of them have become land and housing investors.

“Trelawny is popular among the buyers, so is St. Ann, which is right now trending. Direct investment is St. James, they are looking at villas and residential homes, investing in Airbnb,” Khori Hyde, founder and brand director of Britjam told The Gleaner last week.

Hyde shared that the patrons fall in love with Jamaica and decide, “Here’s an investment, here’s an opportunity and they do the Math. Example: if a hotel room costs US$200 and that sleeps two, and they have a piece of property with a three bedroom. They’re thinking it sleeps six.”
