<P class=StoryText align=justify>MONTEGO BAY - With seven first round ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup first round games still to be played this season, goal scoring in the island's largest football competition has shown a decline compared to the previous three seasons.
So far 337 goals have been scored in 137 games compared to 529 goals scored after the first round of last season's competition.
Four hundred and eleven goals were scored at the end of the first round in 2004, while 437 were scored after the first round in 2003.
Sixty-seven schools are entered in this year's competition, the second lowest number in the last four seasons after a high of 72 took part in 2005.
Zone L, the zone with the highest number of schools -eight - leads the goal scoring race so far with 73 just ahead of Zone E with the high scoring St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) and Munro College with 61 goals scored so far.
Zone D with just four schools and with only three games played has seen the least number of goals with 11 scored so far.
Interestingly, the largest drop off in scoring in any one zone from last season comes in Zone A where just 20 goals have been scored so far, compared to 96 scored last year when there were seven teams in the zone. Five schools are taking part this year.
Undoubtedly Cornwall College are one of the biggest surprises this year, for the wrong reasons, having scored just two goals in four matches to be at the bottom of Zone A, after scoring 20 goals at the end of the first half last season. At the end of the first four games last year Cornwall had scored 15 goals, including a 10-0 trouncing of newcomers Irwin High.
Zone E leaders STETHS who have scored in four of their five games played so far lead the way with 22 goals, led by the competition's two top strikers - Renario Downswell with 10 goals and Comar Pascoe with nine.
Glenmuir High, the 2004 champions are next with 17 goals, while Munro College, fresh from their seven-goal outburst against Maggotty High on Wednesday, have scored 16 goals, while Frome Technical High and Titchfield are on 15 goals each so far.
At the other end of the scale, Maggotty High have so far conceded a whopping 29 goals after five matches, well ahead of debutants Paul Bogle, who have conceded 20 so far from six matches.
