    11-Y-O HERO

    BY FABIAN LEDGISTER Staff Reporter

    Feb 6, 2006

RESIDENTS OF LUKE Lane, Kingston, have a hero among them and guess what, he's only 11.

Javaugn Francis opted to risk his life, braving deadly flames to rescue a four-month-old baby who was about to be consumed in a fire which was ravaging three houses at 25 Luke Lane.

In a time when most young 'ghetto' boys are lured into a life of crime and evil, Javaugn proved many of them are still good, kind-hearted children. "Mi see seh di baby still ina di room, so mi climb tru di window an gu fi har ... Mi neva fraid and mi neva wa di baby fi bun up," said the shy hero.

Residents say one of the homes housed a family with many children, and though the kids were rescued, they were oblivious to the presence of a baby in the burning building. Luckily though, a curious and hyperactive Javaugn was looking through a window, and spotted the baby. Without thinking of his own welfare, he leaped through the window, grabbed the infant, and made good his escape from the inferno.

Firemen on the scene were unable to confirm the cause of the fire, but Princess 'Slug' Daley, the mother of five of the rescued kids (including the infant), showered Javaugn with praises saying he unknowingly saved two lives.

"Is like him save mi life," Daley said of the hero, adding that she was also grateful that her other children had survived. "Mi on mi way to shop when mi get a call seh mi house a bun down. Mi nerves shot up cause mi pikney dem did ina di yard, but all a dem save an mi give tanks."

The fire, which started about 8:10 p.m., was eventually put out by firemen from the York Park Fire Station. The damage from the fire is estimated at $500,000.

Another of the homeowner, Shannae 'Poochie' Campbell, managed to save some of her belongings. Daley was not able to save a single item. "Mi nuh even have pampers fi put pon mi baby much less di other four. Mi need help," cried the distraught mother.

    Crap!

The young man deserves a much better nickname! A “donkey” is an “a_ss”! This young man deserves maximum respect!

I can just imagine the BBC, NBC, etc. talking about Donkey Man Javon Francis in the future! Down with the stupid Donkey Man nonsense!

there is an interview that he refers to himself as "super donkey" after his exploits. This though is due to a lack of maturity and exposure on his part, after being thrust in the limelight. Bare in mind that he speaks to the media in a manner similar to him "lyming" with his friends, which is where is comfort zone is.. His mentor now need to work with him on this.

I do agree with you, that he needs to now distant himself from that "label", as he is no longer a secret in Jamaica, he is now international.

              Are you guys serious?!?!

              So foreign defines us now?!?

I would have you know that not everyone thinks of a donkey the same way we may think of one, that's the first thing.

The second thing is, it's a nickname!

              Aaaaah bwoy!

That's their fear ,its all about perception how others view us , but anyway a donkey in our culture of sports , is one who has long stamina ,why should he drop it , what they should do is explain the cultural reference and Brick yuh right a nuh suh nickname guh in our culture , once it stick ,it stick.

Interesting to see how they market this bredda , will it be to strip the cultural name with some commercial media campaign or embrace it with said campaign.

That said what if dem name a track star sperm ead, yuh know wi love nickname , I had a school mate who played cricket at Ardenne go by that name.

A philosophical bredrin once told me that in any race you will have you thoroughbreds, dark horses and a donkey with ambition! NEVER under estimate the drive of a donkey with ambition!
