9:92 or maybe its the little knowledge that we gave them .

THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Let's see...wind over the legal limit, on a track known for super fast times.

Still 9.92 is not bad all things considered. Could probably win Carifta U20 with a run like that. DWL

      Nice article:

This means about a million and a half Jamaicans have this mutation. But perhaps only a few hundred of them would ever be able to actually run 100 meters in the 10-second-range, if they were spotted early enough and spent years in single-minded training. That is because this gene is a necessary requirement for sprinting but is not in itself sufficient. This tiny number then is less than 0.1% of the population and statistically insignificant. Yet Jamaica produces an endless stream of superb sprinters. That is because the success of a few has resulted in a culture of sprinting, and a system that identifies and trains sprinters very successfully. You have an ecosystem for sprinting success. Jamaica massively outperforms the much larger population of all of West Africa in sprinting, where the genetic advantage is actually endemic.

Now, let’s take a very large population – India’s. There might be a strong selection bias against, say, the ACTN3 SNP or other SNPs that help make great sprinters. So using those same imaginary numbers, we can use a number like 1% of the population with the mutation, which is a huge underrepresentation of the worldwide average. But for a larger population, that will mean a huge number of people (over 15 million, more than five-times the population of Jamaica) with this mutation. Now genetically normalised, there will be 10-times as many people in India who can potentially run a 10-second 100-meter race – but only if they were identified early enough and entered an appropriate lifetime of training and conditioning.

Yes good article. This essentially agrees with what myself, Don1 and a few others have been saying here for what, 10 years or so?

If you search for "necessary" and "sufficient" on these forums you should get multiple hits from posts by me using that same phrase when addressing this topic.

It hits what I have been saying on the head also, enviroment -but only if they were identified early enough and entered an appropriate lifetime of training and conditioning. i.e Champs.

It's not reserved for race, nationality or ethnicity.

We have never disagreed with that regarding Jamaicas success.

The main area of contention has been wether West Africans are genetically predisposed to having sprinting talent , and if it is the likely explanation for their dominance on every all-time world sprinting list.

"Champs" in Israel would not likely yield the same results as Jamaica has had, while "Champs" in Ghana would likely rewrite world sprinting record books in a big way. That is the difference.

              I dont know about that,

You have an ecosystem for sprinting success. Jamaica massively outperforms the much larger population of all of West Africa in sprinting, where the genetic advantage is actually endemic.

Or is he saying the gene is endemic to west Africa? So that would meam they dont have the culture to garner the results?

Or is it ,We have the culture and a endemic advantage of the gene,i wonder how he calculated that advantage given our mixed culture, which is endemic to the carribbean ?

More questions than answer if Israel or India as he proposed copied our culture of champs isnt he saying the results would be same.To me he is saying it can be replicated anywhere if the culture was copied.Having an endemic gene (?) Is the only difference and given its endemic in west Africa they are at best weak in sprinting.

If you define West Africans as those who currently live there they are average at sprinting.

If you define West Africans as those who have a recent history of ancestors there (500 years is a very short time in human genealogy) then West Africans have a near absolute monopoly on elite male sprinting and have also dominated female sprinting in the post-steroids era. No other geographic region comes close nor is likely to come close on a per capita basis.

Sure if China or India dedicates one billion people to finding a few elite sprinters then statistics suggest that they should find some, but they are not working with an equivalent talent pool for sprinting as a Nigeria or Brazil would.
