EDUCATION (academic) is the primary focus of schools. it therefore falls under the minitry of education NOT the ministry of sports. the purpose of schools is in academics.
question to you .... tell me, what is the external exam that is set for high schools with regard to football. there is CAPE/CXC/CSEC even SAT which is the external exam for football for which you will receive certification/qualification?
In the context of - PRIMARY FOCUS OF SCHOOLS
Consider this...
EDUCATION: ...the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life...
...and this...
...the act or process of imparting or acquiring particular knowledge or skills, as for a profession...
...please?
When we post...make serious posts...if we have doubts on understanding of the topic it would be wise to 'stick in' a note of caution. Something like "I think..." or "I believe..." or some such thing.
Your post would lead the uninitiated to think EDUCATION = ACADEMICS or acquiring an education = acquiring academic knowledge or the pursuit of EDUCATION = pursuit of ACADEMICS!!!
When one speaks of acquiring an education in Jamaica the usual 'take away' is, most often there is no understanding of what that acquiring of education entails. Most often those involved in the discussion stick to the narrow area of 'acquiring a good academic foundation'.
There is no understanding that the acquiring of a good education embodies preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life... ...and therefore no understanding of what disciplines outside the sphere of academics contribute to such preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life...
On reflection those same persons will concede that sports is integral to (mature) life and as such appreciation and understanding of sports assist in preparing one for (mature) life. Only then, in JA, comes a grudging acceptance that sports teaches lessons...vital lessons for living the good (mature) life.
Boss you may, as do too many Jamaicans, think sports is less of a necessity in school than academics...but you would be wrong! ...wrong! ...wrong!

Pursuit of academics and pursuit of a top quality education is not one and the same. Our schools are there to provide the latter. Qualify academic teaching and learning would certainly play a part in the acquiring of top quality education.
Does not appear you have a grasp of what being educated means. I think your concept of being 'educated' has as vital component what in JA is euphemistically termed 'an educated fool'? Right?
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
How many world class 19 year old athlete in Jamaica currently that is not training with a world class coach??? Many are working with top coaches on the side.
What of football???
That question shows non-acceptance of our Jamaica reality!
You do recognize that our majority Track Athletes are coached at the school level. I assume you do as you mentioned our schools final year athletes' age i.e. 19 year olds.
The questions you should ask yourself surround:
- Ages covered when you speak of our schools?
- Performance levels of our athletes for each age-group when considering World standards?
- Results at regional and World meets when comparisons are done with other nations?
I would hazard a guess that on a per capita basis and also on a population count basis we lead...(our JA) leads the world! If that guess is 'on the money' then it would follow that most of our World age-group beaters - say, Class 4 through Class 1 - are being coached at school. It may well be that we have more World Class coaches teaching our school Track athletes than we are being given credit for???

Karl in the UK kids are out of school at 16. In the US most kids go to college at 18 years old, yet we have 19 year old playing Dcup and manning cup. You don't see anything wrong with that picture???
Not even talking about the talented kids who are out of school or in US academies long before that.
Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

FACT: Now you are on about blatantly ignoring our reality.
Another FACT: I see much wrong with our football development...or rather lack thereof! ...and mi she suh ova han ova han ova, agen!!!

bricktop...assassin, dunny .... anybody y'all knew about this road to damascus conversion by karl about football specific schools aka "Academies"?
...but the below may not be the beginning of talk on why Academies are good? I would like to ask Tilla to open the "old forum" where ideas are kept - the RBSC Forum!!! Just maybe I wrote on Academies then? ...could that be nearer to 2000 - 2002? Do not know...but it would be interesting to take a look!!!
I think it was this year - 2004 - that the back and forth with Mosiah on Munro (Mosiah's preference) v GC Foster (my preference) siting of the academy began?
yeah nothing but the fact. The US realize that they need to get good players in more organize structure earlier and that is why you have more organized academies they can work with.
What is our reality??? Look Titchfield didn't have a paid coach in the years of colour and after he left it was not the school that paid the coach but old students paying the coach. I don't know if we have a paid dedicated coach right now. In the early 90s the program was cut by the principal. Now tell me that is the environment you want for our future soccer players.

Karl football in high school is for at most 4 months. PE have to be shared between football/cricket/track/and other sports for kids unless I am misinformed. Next time you have time. look at a US academy club and see the year round program.

What is so mindboggling...that so befuddles you, Gamma and Bricktop about putting competent teachers in schools?
What so upsets that you all have mounted this tremendous resistance to having persons who have the subject knowledge and methods to deliver education on the correct way to think on and play the game in our schools?
You are so hell-bent on retarding progress in quality of football played within the schools that you twist yourselves in knots to defend the indefensible. The chatter that 'x', 'y' and 'z' suggests improved quality of play in schools is counter productive is asinine.
The suggestion that additional time cannot be found during the school year for the exceptional talents in a particular sport flies in the face of time found for other subjects for other talented students.
What are the time-table constraints that would permit the non-athlete student to focus on English, Mathematics, Science...etc. and other academic subject but deny the student athlete because his other subject is a sport?
How many hours per day/out of each day does a young academy footballer spend on the game? ...and how many hours does the young academy footballer spend on academic pursuits?
How many hours a day could a school allot to the young footballer? ...and how many hours per day would that young footballer in school have available for academic pursuits?
I wish Gamma, Sass and Bricktop to rationally put before us the syllabus that would preclude adequate...the normal time...the present allotted time for academic subjects being impinged on/compressed/reduced if football was included on the syllabus? ...and that in context whereon time commensurate to what holds in first rate academies is allotted?
Academies: Please post times spent on each of football - football pitch and off-pitch training, academic studies and leisure time?
...again, explain the insurmountable barriers to doing same in our schools?
No crap!
The facts!!!
