Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, has backtracked on claims that 700 jobs to be created under an Inter-American Development Bank funded project is part of the much-talked-about JEEP initiative.
The Performance-Based Routine Road Maintenance Project was launched this afternoon in St Ann, by the Prime minister.
On Sunday, when Simpson Miller announced the project, she said it was part of the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP), which had been promised by the People’s National Party during its election campaign.
However, on Monday night, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) said it had made no agreement with the Government to fund the JEEP.
This afternoon, Simpson Miller clarified that the current project being rolled out is not a part of JEEP.
She said JEEP would be launched later.
Under the IDB-funded project launched today, maintenance work will take place along 270 kilometres of roadway from Portland to Westmoreland at a cost of US$10 million.
Simpson Miller has promised probity in the way the project is carried out.
She also says the work will be distributed on a non-political basis and that workers will be chosen from the communities in which the work is to be carried out.
Simpson Miller also says 100 persons will be trained in technical areas by the HEART Trust/NTA and the National Solid Waste Management Authority.Leave a comment:
