In your 'trajectory' argument you seem to forget that China is not starting from scratch.. there is a lot of 'copying' occuring.. surely you would not expect them to move at the same pace as innovation.. it is easier to copy than innovate.. the problem with copying is you are always one-step behind.. in the case of China they are MANY steps behind..

Yes this Chinese achievement is VERY significant...especially for a nation which a generation ago could not produce a modern aeroplane

The real issue to watch is not merely the achievements of Chinese science but the TRAJECTORY of it

I know. It's almost laughable. They use stolen outdated American rocket science to get to where America was in the 60"s and suddenly they are going to surpass the USA in 20 years?.

RDoc... this is not a useful way to analyze technology developments.

Consider this as examples of how nuanced aerospace tech is:

USA since the retirement of the shuttle (great technology but ultimately a failed program) in 2011, has no means to place humans in Earth orbit much less to go to the moon... US astronauts have to bum a ride on Russian Soyuz craft using 40 year old technology to reach Earth orbit

In 5-7 years or so when the STS technology is mature the US will have its own means for human spaceflight and guess what? The technology that system uses will be a derivative of the 40+ year old Apollo craft (since shuttle tech is not at all viable)

To power its biggest rockets NASA and its US contractors & customers (including the Defense Dept) use Russian engines left over from the Soviet moon program of the 1970s..Why?? Because they're cheap, very reliable and more efficient than rocket boosters the US can currently produce

All this is not to say that the USA doesn't generally have the best aerospace technology...it mostly does except for a very few areas where Russia is roughly equal or superior.... and China is closing the gap rapidly in many areas through technology purchase, theft and their own native development

The USA has unfortunately got itself involved in many hugely wasteful wars and foreign misadventures over the past 30 years along with damaging the industrial base at home through destructive financial gamesmanship. This has left the country debilitated and allowed rivals like China to make ground.

However when it comes to aerospace technology, in analyzing trends and making or understanding credible projections for the future one has to have knowledge of the subject at a granular level...consuming everyday media (like TV programs etc) for such enabling information doesn't cut it

I'm not saying the USA is stagnant...it just has been growing much slower than China for more than a generation. That signifies a RELATIVE decline which may or may not continue. Who knows...China could implode in the near future from its own internal problems and its growth could slow dramatically ... then the relative development equation would change

Jawge I just report the facts. There is no wish or value judgment about China in my posts. I hold no candle for China or their interests

My question to you is this: After reading this do you think that China is ahead of the former soviet union at its zenith militarily? Don't just jump to answer, go slowly. The Chinese lunar landing shows a frightening gap (in terms of technology) between the empire and these regional power. Do you realize that the US accomplished all this in the 60s? By the time China catch up most US citizens could quite possibly be living on another colonized planet to rhatid.
