National Under-17s and Under-23s in action Two of Jamaica’s youth teams, the Under-17s and the Under-21s, are scheduled to go into action next week. The Under-17s, who have been very impressive in the World Cup qualifying campaign this year, will take on the Dominican Republic in a CFU Final Round World Cup qualifying game at the Prison Oval in Spanish Town on Sunday, November 24 at 1:00pm. Both teams will meet in the return leg in the Dominican Republic on December 8. The winner on aggregate will advance to the CONCACAF Final round playoffs in the United States. The two top teams from that round will gain automatic spots to the World Under-17 Championship in Finland next year. The National Under-23s will fly to El Salvador on Sunday to take part in the Central America and Caribbean Games. Jamaica have been drawn in Group three alongside Mexico and Honduras. They play Honduras on November 26 and Mexico two days later. Two teams will advance to the second round. Jamaica and Nigeria promise to attack in Lagos friendly The coaches of Jamaica and Nigeria have promised an attacking game when their teams clash in Wednesday's friendly international in Lagos. 'We're going to play fluid, attacking football for the duration of the game,' Jamaican coach Carl Brown told reporters on Tuesday at the team hotel. 'We want to entertain the crowd here in Lagos because football is about giving the fans their money's worth.' The Nigerians beat Jamaica 1-0 in May in London as part of their preparations for the World Cup in June in South Korea and Japan. Christian Chukwu, Nigeria's newly appointed coach, said he planned to field a 'crack attacking line-up'. 'I have players who want to take the chance and prove what they can do with the ball when going forward,' he told Reuters. It is Chukwu's first home game since he was given the job in August and he dismissed fears that his team would be defensive to avoid defeat. 'On the contrary, my attack is even stronger than the defence,' he said. Since taking over the side, Nigeria have played two games, both ending in draws -- 0-0 against Angola and 2-2 with Senegal. Chukwu did not call up any of Nigeria's top players for Wednesday's warm-up but World Cup striker John Utaka of French club Lens and Sweden-based Peter Ijeh are expected to lead the attack. Utaka has hit a rich vein of scoring form this season while Ijeh has scored 33 goals in 32 games for FC Malmo. Brown said his squad had been boosted by the inclusion of four of his England-based players, including Bolton Wanderers’ Ricardo Gardner. Boyz Move On ST GEORGE'S, Grenada -- Jamaica booked their place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup play-offs scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago in April 2003 by defeating Grenada 4-1 at the Grenada National Stadium yesterday. Jermaine Johnson (eighth and 40th) and Paul Hall (57th and 90th) hit doubles to lead their team to victory. Henderson Ettienne got the consolation in the 75th minute. Jamaica ended the four-nation qualifiers with seven points, one ahead of fellow qualifiers, Guadeloupe, who shocked Barbados 1-0 from a Alain Vertot 85th-minute goal in the curtain raiser. "I believe we prepared ourselves for the Grenada game more than anything else because the host country is usually tough... we needed an early goal and we got it and that took the fight out of the Grenadians," said Jamaica's technical director designate, Carl Brown. Throughout the game the Grenadians offered little resistance to the Jamaican advance and made few forays into their opponents' half of the field. But it was the silky-smooth skills of Johnson that put the life out of the Grenadian backline which had difficulty containing the Jamaican attackers. The Bolton Wanderers midfielder put the Reggae Boyz 1-0 up with a firm grounder from inside the area, after he was fed a neat, chipped pass from Craig Ziadie. Moments later, the pesky Johnson blasted another low shot, but 'keeper Andray Baptiste was down early and gathered the ball. Midfielder Richard Langley, too, was in the mood to shoot as well and tested Baptiste with a low scorcher in the 37th minute, but the 'keeper was equal to the task. Jamaica went 2-0 up when Johnson claimed a loose ball on the edge of the area, slipped by a defender before side-footing wide of a despairing Baptiste. On the resumption, the Reggae Boyz resumed their dance of domination which quickly spawned goal number three. Hall, who was lurking in the goal area, reacted quickly to an Ian Goodison flick on by heading home from close range. And when it seemed that Grenada were dead and buried they came to life when Ettienne beat Aaron Lawrence with a low left foot drive from 18 yards. The goal clearly injected new life into the Grenadian offence, but the solid Jamaican rearguard was sharp and cleared each threatening move. On the stroke of full time Hall got his fourth goal of these play-offs when he tapped home a rebounded 22-yard drive from substitute, Omar Daley to close the show. "Jamaica played well and deserved this victory and we wish them all the best in the next stage of the qualifiers," Grenadian coach Franklyn Simpson said. Jamaica (5-3-2) -- Aaron Lawrence, Ian Goodison, Claude Davis, Tyrone Marshall, Robert Scarlett, Craig Ziadie, Richard Langley (Omar Daley 88th), Fitzroy Simpson, Jermaine Johnson (Andy Williams 46th), Paul Hall and Fabian Taylor (Linval Dixon 84th).
Arnett Gardens win first End-of-round final The celebration was wild and deafening when local hero, Kevin Wilson, scored a "golden goal" to give Arnett Gardens a 2-1 win over Harbour View in the Wray and Nephew Premier League first End-of-round final at the Tony Spaulding Sport Complex on Sunday. After 90 minutes, both teams were locked 1-1 with first-half strikes from Arnett's Fabian Davis (19th minute) and Harbour View's Daniel Shaw (41st). Arnett Gardens - both the defending End-of-first round and NPL champions --received $150,000 plus three bonus points to take them into the second round. Harbour View got $100,000 and one bonus point for their effort.
