IOC strips gold from US men's relay team

    BEIJING (AP):
THE INTERNATIONAL Olympic Committee (IOC) stripped gold medals yesterday from the US men's 4x400 metre relay team that competed at the 2000 Olympics in the aftermath of Antonio Petti-grew's admission that he was doping at the time.

The IOC executive board disqualified the entire team, the fourth gold and sixth overall medal stripped from that US track contingent in the past eight months for doping.

Three gold and two bronze were previously removed after Marion Jones confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs.

Yesterday's decision was almost a formality after Pettigrew gave up his gold medal in June. During a trial involving former track coach Trevor Graham, he admitted in May that he used EPO and human growth hormone from 1997 to 2003.

Five of Pettigrew's teammates also lose their medals: Michael Johnson and twins Alvin and Calvin Harrison ran in the final; Jerome Young and Angelo Taylor ran in the preliminaries.

Somehow, though, I don't feel like celebrating! Being awarded an Olympic Games medal eight years after the event is hardly something that stirs the emotions in any way.

Bahamas must be feeling worse, though, because at least the Jamaican 4x400-meter guys were able to ascend the podium in Sydney and collect their (bronze) medal. Nigeria too must be feeling bad, as they are now going to get a gold medal without hearing their national anthem.

I wonder when our ladies are going to get their 4x400-meter relay gold medal from that 2000 Sydney Olympics? With our knowledge now of Marion Jones' performance-enhancing drug indescretions in Sydney, I feel a new type of bitterness whenever I remember how she left Deon Hemmings in the dust on that leg of the mile relay.

The IOC should invite all these disenfranchised athletes to Bejing and give them their medals PUBLICLY in the stadium.

          Good idea.

And the names of athletes like Pettigrew who caused the gold medal to be lost should also be announced publicly, so the public following the Olympics will hear. Its not much but it should make them feel a little shame, maybe.
