Historian don't be so hard. Buju is not only luck but smart and has put out a good body of work. Many good artist have found themselves in controversity in their recording. M&M still have a rap career. Elton John still have a singing career, and Ice-T still have a career after talking about shooting cops, Sinehead Occonnor still record. I shot the Sherriff was one of Marley's first hit.

Buju dealt with it right from the begining apologising in some fashion. He has not returned to that subject. His work such as Til Shiloh are great work which can't be ignored by reggae music fans.

There is no way that I’ll ever actively support the homosexual lifestyle, but at the same time there is no way that I’m going to be presumptuous enough to think that I have the answer to how individuals should choose to live, particularly when what they do in privacy does not directly affect me or the wider society.

For far too often the lack of education or limited education (in the widest sense of the word “education”) has permeated the attitudes of far too many of our people. We see this insular and parochial thinking reflected in too many instances in our social orientation, hence the need to use euphemisms (“strong-willed people”, etc.) to describe our stupidity and penchant for aggressive, narrow-minded and violent behavior.

The history of certain sects, for example, has been marked by such narrow-minded attitudes, and we see this today in Asian states like Pakistan, and in Middle Eastern states such as Iran, Saudia Arabia, Afghanistan, etc. In the case of Jamaica, this was repeatedly demonstrated by Rastas in the 1970s, and the era before, when a simple thing such as a woman applying makeup was termed sardonically as applying “war paint.” These are the little annoyances that cloud one’s messages and lead to questions about ones intelligence.

While narrow-mindedness is not a characteristic limited to Jamaicans, I often wish that more and more Jamaicans could leave the confines of our vastly overrated little rock and experience the wider world. In other words, become more cosmopolitan. But then again, maybe even this wouldn’t make a difference to anything….

But like I said, Buju is damn lucky that his career has seemingly survived his intolerance and narrow-mindedness, a characteristic which first came to the fore with the rather stupid and now infamous “Boom, Bye Bye.”
